When dealing with sickness during this COVID-19 pandemic, self-care is one of the best ways to safeguard our precious healthcare service. However, it is important to pay attention to symptoms that need urgent attention and seek timely interventions where possible. Self-care involves knowing what we can do for ourselves, when we should seek advice, and where to go to be able to access the appropriate services.

There are key symptoms to be aware of in regards to the COVID-19 virus, particularly a new cough, fever, unexplained headaches and body fatigue (read more HERE).

If you experience any of these symptoms call 111 for advice, or try the government self-test to ascertain whether your symptoms are of concern (try: covid self-test).

Options for treating your symptoms at home include:

  • Medicines or home remedies; such as paracetamol to alleviate fever (as per the recommended dose), warm compresses to relieve muscle aches etc.
  • Getting plenty of rest, and taking the necessary time off work to allow a full recovery
  • Drinking plenty of fluids such as warm drinks or clear soups
  • Avoiding smoking and exposure to any secondhand smoke
  • Continued hand and respiratory hygiene; washing hands for at least 20 seconds whenever required, catching/binning/ killing any germs, and cleaning any surfaces that may be contaminated (door handles, mobile phones, light switches, table tops etc.)
  • Keeping your room well ventilated 


The pharmacy is often an under-utilised service; pharmacists can provide advice on the multiple methods you may use to relieve symptoms, from warm compresses to medications. They can provide you with tips on what your best options may be (for example, use of tablets, ointments, inhalers etc.), information on how to use them correctly, and ensure they are safe to use with other medications.


Doctors and nurse practitioners can be accessed for multiple reasons, particularly for new or progressive symptoms of poor health (that do not require A&E attention).

You can call 200 52441 from 8:15 – 3pm for a GP telephone consultation, Monday-Friday; you may be asked for details with a follow up assessment made over the phone. The GP may request additional information, via Facetime or Whatsapp or to be sent a picture. You may also be required to attend a specific appointment slot in person at the Primary Care Centre. Your GP will determine which is the best course of action for you during your consultation.

After 4:30pm you should call 200 52441 to receive an appointment out of hours (between 5 – 7pm).

There are weekend clinics that run from 9 – 11am & 5 – 6pm Saturday and from 10 – 11am & 5 – 6pm Sunday, within this time you can call 200 52441. Note, Bank Holidays follow the same service as Sundays.

For house calls ring 200 72429 from 9- 11am &  2- 4pm daily.

A&E or 190

For any emergencies call 190 or attend A&E immediately.

There are multiple reasons to contact the emergency department including: chest pains, altered state of consciousness, breathing difficulties, severe bleeds, severe allergic reactions, strokes, burns, injuries, trauma, suspected broken limbs etc. If you need emergency treatment contact them straight away; please inform call handlers if you are experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms so they can prepare accordingly.
