European Antibiotics Awareness Day November 18th 2015
The Antibiotics Awareness Day saw a high profile campaign organised by the Public Health Department with the assistance of Dr Nicholas Cortes a Consultant Microbiologist. It was part of the European Antibiotic Awareness week to promote awareness of antibiotics as a lifesaving resource that unfortunately carries a high risk of misuse.
Globally, the combination of complacency, false perceptions and over-use of antimicrobial medicines has provided the stimulus to encourage new strains of resistant bacteria. Cases of untreatable infections are emerging as there are no effective antibiotic options left. The collaboration of multiple bodies is essential to meet this crisis, from national and professional bodies to the public and private sectors.
As part of this campaign, the Gibraltar Health Authority launched a comprehensive evidenced-based guideline on antibiotic prescription for use by doctors and nurses.
