International Older Persons Day, 14th October 2017

International Older Persons Day, 14th October 2017

This yearly campaign highlights the importance of care and attention to the older generation; it emphasizes the expanding contributions of older people in their families and stresses the importance of meeting their needs, rights and preferences. The number of older persons worldwide is set to increase by 56% by 2030, to more than 1.4 billion. By 2030, the number of people aged over 60 years will exceed that of younger people (aged 15- 24 years). The UN stress the importance of acknowledging the “often overlooked and under-appreciated contributions of older persons“, not just for their well-being but also to ensure we  reach sustainable development goals. Therefore, the chosen theme for International Day of Older Persons this year is “Stepping into the Future: Tapping the Talents, Contributions and Participation of Older Persons in Society.”

Key areas of continued interest/ concern for older persons include:

  • secure healthcare
  • regular income
  • legal protection
  • access to financial services
  • access to information, including technology
  • overcoming discrimination

There are several services in place within Gibraltar to assist with the continued support and care of older persons.
