Fountain House began when former patients of a New York psychiatric hospital began to meet together informally to support people living with mental illness, rather than as a service or a treatment program. Communities around the world that have modelled themselves after Fountain House, embracing the term “Clubhouse,” which clearly communicates the message of membership and belonging.
A Clubhouse provides a restorative environment for people whose lives have been severely disrupted because of their mental illness, and who need the support of others who are in recovery and who believe that mental illness is treatable.
‘Inclusion’ is the key message at the very heart of the Clubhouse way of working.
Clubhouse Gibraltar provides support with employment, a work-ordered day, a social program, community support, reach out, education, housing and a Health and Wellness program. It is a place where people with mental health difficulties participate in their own recovery process by working and socializing together in a safe and nurturing environment. Individuals are empowered to develop their self-confidence and become productive citizens.
The vision of Clubhouse Gibraltar is “to enable individuals affected by mental health difficulties in Gibraltar to develop to their full potential by providing an environment that offers hope, respect, dignity and opportunities”. Click here for more.
