Children and COVID-19

Children and COVID-19

Cases of COVID-19 infection in children are typically quite mild; however their reactions to Covid-19 can be varied. People with mild or no symptoms of infection, including children, are all likely to play a role in the transmission and spread of COVID-19 in the community. Therefore, social distancing, hand washing and everyday preventive behaviours are key to slowing the spread of the virus, protecting our most vulnerable and safeguarding our health care system.

Typical symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, cough, and shortness of breath; however, children have also shown symptoms of gastric disturbance such vomiting and loose stools (diarrhoea). As with adults, the real worry for children comes for those with underlying conditions, particularly unknown underlying illnesses, that place them at an increased risk of severe illness. If you have any concerns for a child displaying potential COVID-19 symptoms call 111.
