World Heart Day, 29th September 2019

Looking after your heart will make you feel physically healthier and able to enjoy your life to the fullest.

To do so means to eat well, exercise regularly, reduce your intake of alcohol and stop smoking (also avoiding exposure to second hand smoke) and avoiding stress.

According to the World Health Organisation:

  • Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is responsible for 17.9 million deaths every year, and  this is predicted to rise to nearly 23 million by 2030.
  • 80% of premature deaths from CVD could be avoided by avoiding tobacco use, eating a healthy diet, being physically active and avoiding over-consumption of alcohol.

Small lifestyle changes can make a powerful difference to our heart health: 30 minutes of activity a day, giving up smoking and eating a healthy diet (low in saturated fats and high in fresh fruit and vegetables, wholegrain foods and opting for lean meat) can help prevent heart disease and stroke.
